Bij het uitvoeren van een sportmassage integreer ik, indien nodig en gewenst, ook het behandelen van triggerpoints.

Triggerpoints zijn bepaalde punten in ons lichaam die pijn veroorzaken in spieren en die de zenuwbanen beïnvloeden. Een triggerpoint is feitelijk een permanente verkramping van een spier en is volgens een definitie van de grondleggers van de Triggerpoint therapie (Travell en Simons) "een heel gemakkelijk te irriteren, hevig pijnlijke plek in een knobbeltje, in een palpeerbaar (voelbaar) strakke streng spierweefsel."

De belangrijkste symptomen van triggerpoints zijn:

(afgeleide) pijn;
functie-uitval zoals spierstijfheid, zwakte, oedeem, misselijkheid, duizeligheid en afwijkingen in de lichaamshouding;
samendrukken van bloedvaten en afklemmen van de bloedstroom;
autonome effecten zoals bloeddoorlopen of heftig tranende ogen, wazig zicht, hangende oogleden, overmatige speekselvorming, druipneus, kippenvel, harde en overgevoelige tepels, onregelmatige hartslag;
problemen met bewegen, vertroebeling van de waarneming, duizeligheid, evenwichtsstoornissen, coordinatieproblemen;
emotionele problemen, slapeloosheid, chronische vermoeidheid.

De belangrijkste oorzaken van triggerpoints zijn:

ongelukken, valpartijen, verrekkingen, teveel werk;
vermijdbare overbelasting van spieren (bijv. repeterende bewegingen, RSI);
onvermijdbaar misbruik van spieren (bijv. trauma, plotselinge schokken);
onvermoed misbruik van spieren (immobiliteit bij breuk of blessure, injecties, enz);
fybromyalgie.

Als ik tijdens het behandelen constateer dat triggerpoints (mede) veroorzakers zijn van de problemen dan integreer in de behandeling van de triggerpoints in mijn massagebehandeling. Uiteraard is het ook mogelijk slechts de triggerpoints te deactiveren tijdens een behandeling.

Ik heb mijn certificaat Triggerpoint massage gehaald bij ATS Massageopleidingen. Ook deze opleiding is geaccrediteerd door ACE Algemeen Centrum voor Examinering.
